Working divers — verified before enrolment
The ITDA Occupational Diving qualifications are open to divers with the right background, not to everyone. Every one of the 15 qualifications has its own entry requirement, and each is enrolled separately.

The qualifications

Research Diver
Entry: Open Water Scuba Diver (or equivalent)
Experience: 20+ logged dives
Survey and transect methods · quadrats and data recording · underwater photography for science · working in a research team
Intermediate Research Diver
Entry: ITDA Research Diver or an equivalent scientific diving certification
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Survey design · species identification and census · sampling and measurement · tagging programmes · contributing to research datasets
Advanced Research Diver
Entry: Intermediate Research Diver (or equivalent) with evidence of field survey work
Experience: 100+ logged dives
Leading survey teams · experimental design and data quality assurance · specialised instrumentation · permitting, reporting and publication
Aquaculture Diving
Entry: Certified diver with low-visibility or overhead-environment experience
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Net inspection and repair · stock handling support · mooring and anchor systems · predator netting · biosecurity and industry risk
Public Safety Diving
Entry: Certified diver aged 18+ with rescue-level training
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Search patterns and tender-directed search · victim recovery and evidence handling · contaminated water · team command and documentation
Advanced Rescue
Entry: ITDA Scuba Rescue Diver (or equivalent)
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Advanced life support in the water · multiple-victim management · deep and decompression incidents · overhead rescue · casualty evacuation
Full Face and Hard Hat Diving
Entry: Certified occupational or commercial diver with a current diving medical
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Full-face mask and band-mask operation · hard hat donning, sealing and bailout · surface-supplied systems · tender procedures
UW Communications
Entry: Certified occupational diver (full-face or hard hat experience recommended)
Experience: 30+ logged dives
Hard-wire and wireless through-water communications · diver-to-surface procedure · standard voice protocols · fault finding
SSA Surface Supplied Air
Entry: Certified commercial or occupational diver with a current diving medical
Experience: 50+ logged dives
Compressor, panel and hose management · umbilical handling · diver-tender procedure · gas monitoring · bailout and emergency procedures
Occupational Diver SCUBA (Level 1)
Entry: Certified diver with a current diving medical (ITDA Module A + B)
Experience: 20+ logged dives
SCUBA "at work diver" tasking to 30m · rigging and underwater search · lifting bags and hand tools · surface team and tender duties · diver emergencies
Occupational Standard Surface Supply Diver (Level 2)
Entry: ITDA Level 1 (SCUBA) or equivalent, with a current diving medical
Experience: 30+ logged dives
Surface Supplied Air Diving Equipment to 30m · panel operation and surface decompression · underwater tools, cutting and welding basics · two-compartment chamber operations
Occupational Surface Supply Diver - No SCUBA (Level 2A)
Entry: Certified diver with a current diving medical (ITDA Module A + C)
Experience: 30+ logged dives
Surface orientated air diving equipment to 30m without a SCUBA requirement · panel operation · rigging, search and inspection tasks · surface team procedures
Occupational Deep Surface Supply Diver (Level 3)
Entry: ITDA Level 2 (Standard Surface Supply) or equivalent
Experience: 40+ logged dives
Open bell and hot-water suit diving to 50m · dynamically positioned vessel diving · deep surface supply emergencies · bell diver's attendant and panel operator duties
Occupational Deep Surface Supply Diver - No SCUBA (Level 3A)
Entry: ITDA Level 2A (Surface Supply without SCUBA) or equivalent
Experience: 40+ logged dives
Open bell and hot-water suit diving to 50m without a SCUBA requirement · panel operation · dynamically positioned vessel diving · deep surface supply emergencies
Occupational Closed Bell / Mixed Gas Diver (Level 4)
Entry: ITDA Level 3 or 3A with 50+ logged hours as an air diver (10hrs 20m+, 6hrs 30m+)
Experience: 60+ logged dives
Closed bell and mixed-gas operations to 100m · bellman and lock-out diver duties · deck compression chamber operations · saturation and bounce diving · diving medicine and legislation
